South Florida Vanpool Program

Vanpooling helps in alleviating traffic congestion and improving our environment and the quality of life. Benefits for vanpoolers include: the Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program, back-up vans, preferential parking, and tax deductions. Vanpoolers save money on their personal car insurance, maintenance and parking fees.

The South Florida Vanpool Program provides luxurious well-equipped commuter vans for commuters. It is based on a month-to-month agreement, with no long-term commitment or financial responsibility. In just a few easy steps you and your neighbors, friends and co-workers can ride together and save together!

The agreement is between the vanpool provider (VPSI, Inc.) and the volunteer driver. VPSI provides the van, insurance (no-deductible), all scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance, as well as a back-up vehicle, if needed.

A monthly fee is charged based on the size of the van (7, 9 or 15 passengers) and the monthly mileage. A $400 subsidy per van per month is provided for the participants in the program.

The South Florida Vanpool Program (SFVP) was created in 1998 by the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). After the success and expansion of the program, Broward and Palm Beach metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) joined the SFVP in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Over 80% of the funding source for the program is Federal, while the State has matched the rest of the funding. No local funds have ever been used for the operation of the program.

The SFVP is a joint effort between the MPOs (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach), FDOT (Districts 4 & 6), South Florida Commuter Services (SFCS) and VPSI, Inc.
